About the role
As the Science Manager, you will lead the science team, overseeing both R&D and science operations. This role combines scientific expertise, team leadership, and operational oversight to ensure the delivery of high-quality data analysis, method development and experimental execution. You will work closely with our Scientific Advisors and CEO to define scientific priorities, mentor the team, and enable CREW’s mission through innovative research and rigorous analysis. You will play a key role deepening the scientific impact of alkalinity enhancement in wastewater as well as other applications, such as agriculture and rivers.
Your work will help to continue positioning CREW Carbon as a leader in the carbon removal industry, expanding our reach and impact. This is an ideal opportunity for a detail-oriented, mission-driven operator with experience in leading scientific teams, managing complex research projects, and bridging laboratory and field operations to deliver actionable, high-quality results.
This position is a full-time role. Location will be onsite at our labs and office in New Haven, CT.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor the science team, fostering a culture of collaboration, learning, and excellence.
- Set the strategic direction for scientific research programs, ensuring alignment with CREW’s technology goals and carbon removal verification requirements.
- Oversee laboratory and field operations, including protocols, SOPs, equipment use, safety, and data management.
- Collaborate closely with CREW’s Product team, including data engineering and biogeochemical modeling, to leverage CREW’s data infrastructure, integrate experimental and operational data, and produce actionable insights.
- Coordinate with Operations, Engineering, and Product teams to ensure seamless integration of R&D outputs into technology deployment.
- Drive scientific innovation through experimental design, data analysis, and method development.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of scientific staff.
Experience Requirements
- PhD in geochemistry, biogeochemistry, environmental sciences, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience managing and leading a scientific team, ideally within a field and lab research environment.
- Strong proficiency in analytical chemistry techniques (e.g., ICP-MS,) and experience with statistical programming, geochemical modeling (e.g., Python, R, PHREEQC).
- Extensive experience in conducting field and lab research, including designing and executing experiments, collecting samples, and performing data analysis.
- Ability to lift up to 15 lbs and adapt to dynamic, fast-paced startup environments.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing startup environment where priorities can shift on a monthly basis.

Bonus Qualifications
- Postdoctoral or applied experience in a relevant scientific field with a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience in startups, especially in early-stage technology development and scaling.
- Familiarity with carbon removal MRV methodologies or environmental compliance.
