About the role
As the Assistant Controller, you will own CREW Carbon’s accounting function end-to-end while supporting our financial planning and analysis (FP&A) activities. You will ensure that our books are accurate, compliant, and audit-ready, while also helping leadership translate financial data into insights and forecasts..
You will play a key role in building and maintaining the financial backbone of a fast-growing climate company. You will be responsible for managing all day-to-day accounting processes, leading month-end close, preparing accurate financial statements, and implementing the tools and processes needed to scale our finance function. At the same time, you will collaborate with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and cash management, ensuring CREW has the visibility it needs to make smart strategic decisions.
Your work will help to continue positioning CREW Carbon as a leader in the carbon removal industry, expanding our reach and impact. This is an ideal opportunity for a detail-oriented, mission-driven operator with experience in accounting and finance, who is excited to wear both the controller hat and the analyst hat.
This position is a full-time role. Location will be remote in the U.S., working East Coast hours, with periodic travel to our offices in Brooklyn, NY.
Responsibilities
- Own all accounting processes, including general ledger, reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and expense management.
- Lead the monthly close process and prepare timely, accurate, GAAP-compliant financial statements.
- Maintain financial statements on a project-by-project basis, helping manage and maintain orderly financials that roll up to the enterprise-wide level.
- Maintain audit readiness and support tax and regulatory filings.
- Manage accounting integrations across tools, including QuickBooks, Procurement Express, Sequoia, Carta, etc.).
- Develop and maintain internal controls, financial policies, and processes.
- Partner with operating & finance leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis.
- Build dashboards and variance reports using QuickBooks add-ons and AI-powered FP&A tools.
- Translate financial data into clear, actionable insights for project and executive decision-making.
- Prepare board and investor reporting packets, ensuring financial information is reliable and transparent.
- Continuously improve systems and workflows to scale with CREW Carbon’s growth.
Experience Requirements
- 5–8 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, including time in both public accounting and a growth-stage company.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
- Strong foundation in GAAP and audit standards.
- Expert knowledge of QuickBooks Online, including multi-entity management and advanced reporting.
- Experience with financial integrations and tools (e.g., Carta, Fathom, LiveFlow, Datarails, or similar).
- Strong Excel/Google Sheets modeling and data analysis skills.
- Excellent relationship-building skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing startup environment where priorities can shift on a monthly basis.
