  • Collaborate with internal teams (Engineering, Operations, Science) to develop business cases, leverage high-level financial models, and help build preliminary technical assessments to support decision-making
  • Build and nurture strong relationships with decision-makers at utilities, consulting engineers, and strategic partners.
  • Develop insights into customer pain points, procurement processes, and industry trends to help refine CREW’s GTM and commercial strategy.
  • Negotiate key commercial terms and close opportunities in alignment with CREW’s partnership model.
  • Represent CREW on-site with prospects, customers, and at industry conferences (expect 50–75%+ travel).

Experience Requirements

  • A degree in engineering or a relevant scientific field is required or a degree in a business discipline if the candidate has extensive previous work experience in a comparable role. Degrees in environmental engineering or chemical engineering are preferred.
  • 3-5+ years experience in wastewater, environmental services, or engineering consulting
  • 1-3+ years experience in business development, technical sales, or go-to-market roles. Experience with startups or technology companies is highly preferred.
  • Proven ability to navigate complex sales cycles and work with municipal utilities and consulting engineers.
  • Excellent communication skills—strong written, verbal, and presentation abilities.
  • Technical aptitude and ability to communicate complex processes in simple, compelling ways.
  • Strong relationship-building, trust-building, and negotiation skills.
  • Comfortable working with commercial frameworks & financial models, high-level engineering designs, and building business cases for new opportunities.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset: comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving environment with a small, agile team, where priorities can shift on a weekly basis.
  • You practice extreme ownership (no task is too small).
  • You love being in the trenches with your team and working with high empathy.
  • You have a growth mindset.
  • Willingness to travel 50–75% across the U.S. (and occasionally internationally).

About the Role

As CREW’s Data Engineer, you will lead the architecture, development, and scaling of CREW’s data platform in collaboration with the Science, Product, and Operations teams.

You will play a key role in designing and implementing robust, enterprise-scale data infrastructure that serves as the backbone for carbon removal verification (MRV), operations optimization, and scientific analysis across multiple deployment sites. You will be responsible for building scalable, reliable data pipelines to ingest, process, and standardize diverse data streams from instruments, partner utilities, and SCADA systems, while establishing and enforcing data governance and quality standards that ensure accuracy, reliability, accessibility, and compliance with carbon crediting requirements.

Your work will accelerate CREW’s data velocity and reliability, cementing our position as a leader in the carbon removal industry as we expand in scale and impact. This is an ideal opportunity for a detail-oriented, mission-driven engineer with experience building production-grade data infrastructure for complex, multi-site operations in climate, environmental, or utility contexts.

This position is a full-time role. Location will be remote, working East Coast hours, with optional hybrid work out of our offices in Brooklyn, NY or New Haven, CT.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain CREW’s enterprise-scale data platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and reproducibility across multiple teams and projects.
  • Own data governance, naming standards, and metadata standards across CREW’s data infrastructure.
  • Build and maintain processing workflows for existing and new measurement streams, improving automated QA/QC processes to check, validate and audit data.
  • Stand up a secure, accessible cloud database with reliable ingestion, transformation, and retrieval paths; implement data security, backup, and cost controls.
  • Integrate external, industrial-grade cloud systems with CREW’s data infrastructure.
  • Package data pipelines and tools as maintainable, production-ready projects with CLI entry points, CI/CD, unit tests, clear documentation and SOPs.
  • Partner with Science, Engineering and Operations teams to deliver decision-ready datasets and dashboards for MRV, operations, and analytics.
  • Mentor and support teammate contributions to company codebases by leading code reviews, establishing engineering standards, and promoting best practices in software and data engineering

Experience Requirements

  • 5-8+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, software engineering, or equivalent technical roles with production ownership; strong track record leading the design and implementation of enterprise-scale data platforms (utilities/IoT/climate-tech preferred).
  • Fluent in Python and SQL; comfortable with schema design, time-series data, and scientific instrument files.
  • Built and operated data pipelines/orchestrated workflows on cloud resources (AWS, GCP).
  • Pragmatic about data infrastructure and deployment strategies; rigorous about testing, security, documentation, and clear communication.
  • Comfortable designing lightweight front-end or dashboard functionality to deliver insights to end-users.
  • Experience mentoring and supporting other engineers, guiding code quality, maintainability, and standards.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup environment; practices extreme ownership, high empathy, and a growth mindset.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience integrating SCADA, IoT, or third-party utility systems.
  • Experience developing front-end dashboards and visualization platforms.
